Care That Prioritizes Safety and Comfort

Medical detox is an early stage of treatment that helps people withdraw from alcohol or other drugs with professional support. The care team monitors symptoms, works to reduce risks, and helps prepare each person for ongoing treatment. Detox is not a complete treatment for addiction on its own, but it can be an important first step.

Your Wellbeing Comes First

What Is Medical Detox?

During treatment for substance use disorders, medical detox programs assist in the removal of toxins (drugs and/or alcohol) while addressing any withdrawal symptoms that arise. The detoxification process is often physically and emotionally taxing for those with physiological dependence, so individualized care should address physical, emotional, and social needs.

Due to the uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous symptoms of withdrawal, it is important to remain under the close supervision of medical professionals while detoxing from addictive substances, and accredited facilities are essential for safe medical detoxification because privately owned centers may not offer the same level of medical oversight. Throughout treatment in a detox facility, addiction treatment professionals can provide you with medications to ease your discomfort and manage the symptoms resulting from drug or alcohol withdrawals. Medication-Assisted Treatment can treat withdrawal by combining medications with counseling support. For example, medical detox programs often utilize FDA-approved medication management services to prevent seizures that may occur during withdrawal from alcohol and benzodiazepines, and medical detox typically lasts seven to ten days, with alcohol addiction or benzodiazepine withdrawal sometimes requiring up to ten days.

In maintaining a safe, comfortable treatment environment, medically supervised detox programs are staffed with trained medical professionals who will be there to support you every step of the way. As a vital resource for those seeking addiction recovery services, alcohol and drug detox programs help you throughout the sub-acute detox phase of recovery and continue into residential and outpatient treatment to lower your risk of relapse, including dual-diagnosis care for underlying mental health issues such as depression and anxiety when a substance use disorder or other co-occurring disorder is present.

I walked through those doors only focused on detox. I ended up staying 30 days, because of my roommate, staff and the vibe. Ty SCBH, for giving me my life back. I was drowning and you pulled me out the deep end. The staff was so empathetic and understanding. If you are struggling... go, learn and learn. What I've been given back is priceless. Check em out!

South Coast is a wonderful place for any addict who needs help with their addiction. I had been in addiction for over 15 years and finally found my recovery solution with this facility. It was clean and very friendly. All of the facility, medical, and nursing staff were amazing and honestly listen to you. The groups were and people were so welcoming and informative about addiction and made me feel as though I wasn't an outcast for being an addict. I want to thank South Coast for being so gracious and caring to my addiction needs. If you are needing help with your addiction this is the place where you can find freedom from your disease of addiction and live happily in life. It definitely saved my life and now I get to be the Mother and Grandma my kiddos need!

Beyond Detox

What Happens After Detox?

Recovery begins with detox, but the right next step may include residential programs when more structure is needed. Inpatient treatment commonly lasts about 30 to 45 days before stepping down to lower levels of care, based on your needs, progress, and clinical recommendations.

Residential Treatment

Structured treatment and support in a live-in setting, when clinically appropriate, can help treat drug addiction, alcohol addiction, and co-occurring mental illness.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Scheduled, intensive treatment while returning home outside program hours; PHP may include group counseling, medication management, and other outpatient services while allowing a person to return home after programming.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Ongoing structured treatment that may offer more flexibility around daily life, with IOP serving as one of the outpatient programs that provides ongoing support after detox or higher levels of care and can be part of aftercare planning to help people stay sober and focus on daily recovery.

Your Care Journey

What to Expect During Medical Detox

Every person’s experience is different. Your team will explain the process and help you understand each next step.

Assessment & evaluation

Your team reviews your health history, substance use, current symptoms, alcohol use, and immediate care needs, including your medical history. For alcohol withdrawal, staff may ask about your last drink because symptoms can begin soon after you stop or cut back. They also consider co-occurring disorders involving both addiction and mental health issues during the assessment.

A personalized care plan

A personalized treatment plan is developed after clinicians assess withdrawal risks, substance use disorder concerns, and any co-occurring mental health needs, with the goal of treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.

Monitored withdrawal

Professionals monitor your progress and adjust support based on your clinical needs, which is especially important if you may be detoxing from more than one substance because symptoms can become severe, and polysubstance withdrawal can be more complex in Oklahoma, where overdose deaths often involve both methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Planning the next step

Before discharge, your team can help with aftercare planning to identify the next step, including referrals to outpatient programs, support groups, and other ongoing support that helps people stay sober after detox.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Medical detox typically lasts seven to ten days, though the exact timeline depends on the substance, your health, and symptom severity. Detox for alcohol addiction may last up to ten days, and alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal may also require up to ten days.

In most cases, no. Withdrawal can become dangerous without medical support, so it is safer to seek care in a medically supervised detox center where symptoms can be monitored and managed.

The timeline often starts from your last drink if alcohol is involved. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms commonly peak within 24 to 72 hours after that drink, but prolonged withdrawal symptoms such as sleep or mood changes can continue afterward.

After a detox center stay, many people transition into residential care, outpatient treatment, group therapy for peer support, or other continued treatment options based on their needs.
